9 Famous Things Invented by Accident

These are inventions that were invented by accidents. It's funny how often it is that things exist because someone accidentally made it. And by luck, it turned out to be good invention. What do you think? Is it already written by God for certain people to invent things or is it just pure luck that bring those people into their inventions?

  1. Play-Doh - One smell most people remember from childhood is the odor of Play-Doh, the brightly-colored, nontoxic modeling clay. Play-Doh was accidentally invented in 1955 by Joseph and Noah McVicker while trying to make a wallpaper cleaner. It was marketed a year later by toy manufacturer Rainbow Crafts. More than 700 million pounds of Play-Doh have sold since then, but the recipe remains a secret.

  2. Fireworks - Fireworks originated in China some 2,000 years ago, and legend has it that they were accidentally invented by a cook who mixed together charcoal, sulfur, and saltpeter -- all items commonly found in kitchens in those days. The mixture burned and when compressed in a bamboo tube, it exploded. There's no record of whether it was the cook's last day on the job.

  3. Potato Chips - If you can't eat just one potato chip, blame it on chef George Crum. He reportedly created the salty snack in 1853 at Moon's Lake House near Saratoga Springs, New York. Fed up with a customer who continuously sent his fried potatoes back, complaining that they were soggy and not crunchy enough, Crum sliced the potatoes as thin as possible, fried them in hot grease, then doused them with salt. The customer loved them and "Saratoga Chips" quickly became a popular item at the lodge and throughout New England.Eventually, the chips were mass-produced for home consumption, but since they were stored in barrels or tins, they quickly went stale. Then, in the 1920s, Laura Scudder invented the airtight bag by ironing together two pieces of waxed paper, thus keeping the chips fresh longer. Today, chips are packaged in plastic or foil bags or cardboard containers and come in a variety of flavors, including sour cream and onion, barbecue, and salt and vinegar.

  4. Slinky - In 1943, naval engineer Richard James was trying to develop a spring that would support and stabilize sensitive equipment on ships. When one of the springs accidentally fell off a shelf, it continued moving, and James got the idea for a toy. His wife Betty came up with the name, and when the Slinky made its debut in late 1945, James sold 400 of the bouncy toys in 90 minutes. Today, more than 250 million Slinkys have been sold worldwide.

  5. Saccharin - Saccharin, the oldest artificial sweetener, was accidentally discovered in 1879 by researcher Constantine Fahlberg, who was working at Johns Hopkins University in the laboratory of professor Ira Remsen. Fahlberg's discovery came after he forgot to wash his hands before lunch. He had spilled a chemical on his hands and it, in turn, caused the bread he ate to taste unusually sweet. In 1880, the two scientists jointly published the discovery, but in 1884, Fahlberg obtained a patent and began mass-producing saccharin without Remsen. The use of saccharin did not become widespread until sugar was rationed during World War I, and its popularity increased during the 1960s and 1970s with the manufacture of Sweet'N Low and diet soft drinks.

  6. Post-it Notes - A Post-it note is a small piece of paper with a strip of low-tack adhesive on the back that allows it to be temporarily attached to documents, walls, computer monitors, and just about anything else. The idea for the Post-it note was conceived in 1974 by Arthur Fry as a way of holding bookmarks in his hymnal while singing in the church choir. He was aware of an adhesive accidentally developed in 1968 by fellow 3M employee Spencer Silver. No application for the lightly sticky stuff was apparent until Fry's idea. The 3M company was initially skeptical about the product's profitability, but in 1980, the product was introduced around the world. Today, Post-it notes are sold in more than 100 countries.

  7. Silly Putty - It bounces, it stretches, it breaks -- it's Silly Putty, the silicone-based plastic clay marketed as a children's toy by Binney & Smith, Inc. During World War II, while attempting to create a synthetic rubber substitute, James Wright dropped boric acid into silicone oil. The result was a polymerized substance that bounced, but it took several years to find a use for the product. Finally, in 1950, marketing expert Peter Hodgson saw its potential as a toy, renamed it Silly Putty, and a classic toy was born! Not only is it fun, Silly Putty also has practical uses -- it picks up dirt, lint, and pet hair; can stabilize wobbly furniture; and is useful in stress reduction, physical therapy, and in medical and scientific simulations. It was even used by the crew of Apollo 8 to secure tools in zero gravity.

  8. Microwave Ovens - The microwave oven is now a standard appliance in most American households, but it has only been around since the late 1940s. In 1945, Percy Spencer was experimenting with a new vacuum tube called a magnetron while doing research for the Raytheon Corporation. He was intrigued when the candy bar in his pocket began to melt, so he tried another experiment with popcorn. When it began to pop, Spencer immediately saw the potential in this revolutionary process. In 1947, Raytheon built the first microwave oven, the Radarange, which weighed 750 pounds, was 51/2 feet tall, and cost about $5,000. When the Radarange first became available for home use in the early 1950s, its bulky size and expensive price tag made it unpopular with consumers. But in 1967, a much more popular 100-volt, countertop version was introduced at a price of $495.

  9. Corn Flakes - In 1894, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg was the superintendent of the Battle Creek Sanitarium in Michigan. He and his brother Will Keith Kellogg were Seventh Day Adventists, and they were searching for wholesome foods to feed patients that also complied with the Adventists' strict vegetarian diet. When Will accidentally left some boiled wheat sitting out, it went stale by the time he returned. Rather than throw it away, the brothers sent it through rollers, hoping to make long sheets of dough, but they got flakes instead. They toasted the flakes, which were a big hit with patients, and patented them under the name Granose. The brothers experimented with other grains, including corn, and in 1906, Will created the Kellogg's company to sell the corn flakes. On principle, John refused to join the company because Will lowered the health benefits of the cereal by adding sugar.

If you LOVE someone..

Last time one of my friends asked me about her crush on a guy she knows. She likes him, that's for sure. But one thing she doesn't really know is whether it is really love or just lust? And then I said to her that if she only want him near you just to satisfy your 'hunger' for him, it's absolutely lust. This means that it is more into her egoistic side in which in love one's ego has to be put behind when two hearts are collide. But if she wants to be near him just to talk and laugh, it could be love. I can say that it is merely more than just an attraction. If it is attraction, it should have been inside and outside attraction. And the most important things is to listen closely to your heart, when it is LOVE that appears...the heart can feel it. Here's a complete article about how to find out when you love someone. Hope this will be useful for those of you are are confuse...

How to Know if You Love Someone - Simple yet Powerful Ways to Find Out

Most people have this feeling inside them but are not sure whether it is simple affection, a crush or maybe love. Well love is a lot more stronger word than simple affection and attraction towards someone. Love involves much more than what you find in simple attraction towards someone. Read on to find out some of the simple yet powerful ways to find out whether you love someone or not.

You’re happy when your partner is? - If you feel joy when your partner is happy and just a mere smile or his/her face gives you happiness than you are definitely in love with that person. Love is all about feeling one with your partner therefore you tend to enjoy all joys, lovely moments, moments of satisfaction with your partner.

You don't mind public affection? - Do you often hold hands in public - maybe kiss or hug? If this is the case than you might be in love with your partner. Normally most couples don't prefer showing much public affection until and unless they are in love.

Caring like family- Do you care for your partner just as you care for your family? And get sad when your partner is sad or maybe get happy when you partner is? Love is all about caring and sharing. And if you treat your partner just like you treat your family than you are definitely in love.

You feel like being an open book- When you love someone you feel like being an open book and tend to share some of your biggest secret which you would never even share with your closest of friends. Love makes you surrender totally and you feel like pouring your heart out.

You talk without getting bored - Mostly when it's just a mere crush or attraction you would easily get bored after a while. Everything would just seem boring and you would not feel like carrying on any more. But when you are in love you would always have something to talk about, it would never get boring no matter how long and how much you talk.

You would sacrifice- This is the best way to find out whether you are in love or not. If you are ready to sacrifice something for your partners comfort then you are definitely in love. Love is all about sacrifices and compromises and if you are truly in love you would not mind being committed and making sacrifices for the one you love.

Eva Mendes

Will you just look at her? So sexy but yet she doesn't need to try so hard to look like she's a foxy lady because she is. Here are some of the photos she did for Marie Claire. She can prove to all the women out there including us that being sexy doesn't mean that you have to be size zero. Her body figure is so beautifully shaped. What I like the most about her is when she's smiling and laughing, look like she's got the whole world having fun with her=)

unique..

Here are my findings from completeall. Here's what I have in mind, the chair looks a bit scary to me and the soap/shampoo container seems to be a bit disgusting. The on/off button looks funny, even though I'm not gonna have it around my house. For sure I'm not gonna wear the flower shoes, ever! And the last one is the grass flip flop....love it. In fact, it's the one thing among other things that I wanted to have.

Leighton Meester

Don't you think Leighton Meester is gorgeous? I do. This time she did a photo session for Harper’s Bazaar US. The theme of the photo session is Leighton Meester being in a different phase of her life, in her 20's, 30's, 40's and 50's, with the photographer Terry Richardson. Of course, all of the phases are done in a very chic and stylish way. One thing we can learn from here is that styles comes in all phases of life.

What make our fate

Here's another one of my fave scenes of Sex and the city. This is the one where Mr.Big has to left New York and yes...leaving Carrie alone. I love it when they're dancing. The song that was playing was Moonriver oh how I love the song. And what makes the scene even better was the one that Carrie was alone in her apartment (at the end of the scene) and writing her article about fate. Here's the quote:

Maybe our mistakes are what make our fate. Without them, what would shape our lives? Perhaps if we never veered off course, we wouldn’t fall in love, or have babies, or be who we are. After all, seasons change. So do cities. People come into your life and people go. But it’s comforting to know the ones you love are always in your heart. And if you’re very lucky, a plane ride away.

Fate and Destiny..

Last night when I'm about to sleep, something crossed my mind. I came to think about fate and destiny. I was thinking about how those two elements can affect our life. I know in general about the two elements but when I dig deeper to it, I feel like I know only the surface. I was wondering what if I'm in the middle of the crossroad or an intersection. Let's say that my left side is Fate street and the other side is Destiny street. Are we allow to choose between the two? Or is it that we are automatically directed toward one of those path? And then I found this article that might help me sort things out between fate and destiny...

What is the difference, and how do we choose between them?

We have all heard the terms Fate and Destiny, but what is it in life that makes the difference between which one we follow?

Fate is the natural direction our life is heading in. This is happening anyway, whether we are conscious of it or not. It is the natural flow of life, which is set for us in the stars, and is influenced by the others in our life.

We may quite often react negatively to fate and try to swim the opposite way. We are usually not aware of our deeper feelings and our emotions regarding our fate; we feel that life is in control and we are here just to experience the ride.

Destiny is when we bring our will to bear and become conscious of our thoughts, feeling and emotions; where we take an active role in life and use our own innate consciousness and awareness to choose which direction we want our life to flow in. Following one's destiny is much more proactive: it is exciting and full of joy and happiness, as the universe rewards you with these feelings for the success you are having in fulfilling your destiny.

The way to find your destiny is to become aware of yourself at subtle levels: to feel the faintest impulses of consciousness, in the mind, in your feelings and in your emotions. You may like to work on these one at a time by becoming aware of your thoughts, dreams and aspirations, using your imagination and visualizing what it is you would really like to create with your life.

Use your subtle feelings to connect to your Self deep within your heart and other energy centres in the body; feel if there are any blockages or restrictions in the flow of your energy. Become aware of these and, using deep breathing, relax and release these blockages so your energy flows more freely and fully.

Become aware of your emotions and look for the positive in what you are being and doing; feel how you react emotionally to the people and places in your life; again, look for the joy and the positive ways to achieve what you would like to create with your life.

When you become conscious of all the subtle influences which are affecting your life you slowly but surely change from having a fate to being conscious of your destiny. It is all about taking an active part in life and being and doing what makes your heart sing.

Use your passion and enthusiasm to enliven your life and bring the sparkle back; see your achievements grow as your thoughts, words and ideas take on material form and become solid and realised in the world.

Sunny day..

I can't get enough of home decor, interior and exterior. It's sunny outside when I look up my window. Not sunny as the sun heat the earth but sunny in a nice way. So nice that it makes me thinking about having some me-time outside and just feel the sunshine. That's my imagination when seeing the big chair located on the green grass. But when I look at the dining table on the garden, ooh I feel like doing something fun with the people that I love, doing a barbeque lunch with ice tea while joking and laughing. I found these really nice and neat garden decor on car-moebel.de.

You make me feel...

Have you been in love? I'm sure you have. I have fallen so many times with the same guy...My boyfriend. There are times that I can really feel that his lights are shining on me and making me feel brand new. He can always brings smile on my face, make my cheek blushing and always feel the love when he's around. Just hearing her voice on the phone can make me glow. Glow just like how Yvanne (Claire Danes) glows when the one she loves is around him. Just like a star that lights up the night sky. And this one is a song called "You make me feel brand new" by Simply Red. I've been listening to this song last night and thought that this is a really perfect song to show how I feel..

My love I'll never find the words, my love To tell you how I feel, my love Mere words could not explain Precious love You held my life within your hands Created everything I am Taught me how to live again
Only you Cared when I needed a friend Believed in me through thick and thin This song is for you Filled with gratitude and love
God bless you You make me feel brand new For God blessed me with you You make me feel brand new I sing this song 'cause you Make me feel brand new
My love Whenever I was insecure You built me up and made me sure You gave my pride back to me Precious friend With you I'll always have a friend You're someone who I can depend To walk a path that never ends
Without you My life has no meaning or rhyme Like notes to a song out of time How can I repay You for having faith in me

The Archipelago of Kisses

Wow..this is new for me. New in terms of this is the first time I'm reading this writing and new in a way that the writing is so unique. I've never read anything like this before. I love kiss and I love to be kissed. But the most important thing is not the kiss itself but the person who gives me the kiss. I love it sooooo much when my boyfriend gives me a kiss. It always feel so special, it's like everything else does not matter, the kiss is the only thing that matters. As for me, for sure I love showering my boyfriend with small but special kisses and also tons of kisses. And this writing is so true, it feels good when someone can actually came up with this thing and able to give us new insight about common thing. Read the writing below and tell me what do you think...

The Archipelago of Kisses
(by Jeffrey McDaniel)

We live in a modern society. Husbands and wives don't grow on trees, like in the old days. So where does one find love? When you're sixteen it's easy, like being unleashed with a credit card in a department store of kisses.
There's the first kiss. The sloppy kiss. The peck. The sympathy kiss. The backseat smooch. The we shouldn't be doing this kiss. The but your lips tastes so good kiss. The bury me in an avalanche of tingles kiss. The I wish you'd quit smoking kiss. The I accept your apology, but you make me really mad sometimes kiss. The I know your tongue like the back of my hand kiss.
As you get older, kisses become scarce. You'll be driving home and see a damaged kiss on the side of the road, with its purple thumb out. If you were younger, you'd pull over, slide open the mouth's red door just to see how it fits.
Oh where does one find love? If you rub two glances, you get a smile.Rub two smiles, you get a warm feeling.Rub two warm feelings and presto-you have a kiss. Now what? Don't invite the kiss over and answer the door in your underwear. It'll get suspicious and stare at your toes.
Don't water the kiss with whiskey. It'll turn bright pink and explode into a thousand luscious splinters, but in the morning it'll be ashamed and sneak out of your body without saying good-bye,and you'll remember that kiss forever by all the little cuts it left on the inside of your mouth.
You must nurture the kiss. Turn out the lights. Notice how it illuminates the room. Hold it to your chest and wonder if the sand inside hourglasses comes from especial beach. Place it on the tongue's pillow, then look up the first recorded kiss in an encyclopedia: beneath Babylonian olive tree in 1200 B.C.But one kiss levitates above all the others. The intersection of function and desire. The I do kiss. The I'll love you through a brick wall kiss.Even when I'm dead, I'll swim through the Earth, like a mermaid of the soil, just to be next to your bones.

Stick it up..

EasyLivingMagazine call this wall decor a Stick Up decor. Why? Because it's not a wall paper that sticks to the entire wall of the room. Instead, it's just like a sticker that you can put on any wall of your room such as on the living room, kitchen and bedroom. I love the one on the dressing room. The chandelier stick up looks so nice. What do you think? Do you like the stick up decor?

Life and more..

In life you can always learn something new. I like the idea of learning to live a life in a way that we must be able to pick the positive side out of everything. Good things and bad things happened to us for reasons. Our task is to find out the reason behind it and to always bear in mind that what we do in our life comes back to us. One thing I always keep in mind is to always be good to myself and to others, not to lie to myself and to other people. When you do good, I believe that good things will eventually come along and be with you. So, here are some of the lessons in life...

  1. You can’t change other people, and it’s rude to try.
  2. Those who complain the most, accomplish the least.
  3. If you’re talking to someone you don’t know well, you may be talking to someone who knows way more about whatever you’re talking about than you do.
  4. The cheapest and most expensive models are usually both bad deals.
  5. Everyone likes somebody who gets to the point quickly.
  6. Bad moods will come and go your whole life, and trying to force them away makes them run deeper and last longer.
  7. Children are remarkably honest creatures until we teach them not to be.
  8. If everyone in the show you’re watching is good-looking, it’s not worth watching.
  9. Yelling always makes things worse.
  10. Whenever you’re worried about what others will think of you, you’re really just worried about what you’ll think of you.
  11. Every problem you have is your responsibility, regardless of who caused it.
  12. You never have to deal with more than one moment at a time.
  13. If you never doubt your beliefs, then you’re wrong a lot.
  14. Managing one’s wants is the most powerful skill a person can learn.
  15. Nobody has it all figured out.
  16. Cynicism is far too easy to be useful.
  17. Every passing face on the street represents a story every bit as compelling and complicated as yours.
  18. Whenever you hate something, it hates you back: people, situations and inanimate objects alike.
  19. Most of what we see is only what we think about what we see.
  20. People embellish everything, as a rule.

Chic Conservatory

Did you like the image above? It's called a conservatory. What is a Conservatory? A conservatory is a glass and metal structure traditionally found in the garden of a large house or public park. Modern conservatories are smaller, can be made of PVC and are often added to houses for home improvement purposes. In the UK a conservatory can also refer to a smaller glass enclosure attached to a house. In other parts of the world this is referred to as a Sunroom. The traditional nineteenth century conservatory was a large greenhouse used for growing tender and rare plants, or, less often, for birds and rare animals – sometimes with the plants and animals living together and to to display tropical plants and to hold flower displays.

But how about the modern conservatory? I can see that nowadays, man families are using conservatory not just as the green house but using it for other functions such as dinning room, summer house, home office or even kitchen. Here I found many types of conservatory space. You can see that many of those have functions as to relaxing rooms outside the main house. Here are some of the conservatories from housetohome
